John Mayer Two Rock Signature: Building The Headshell

John Mayer Two Rock Signature: Building The Headshell

December 30, 2022

As I mentioned in my project overview on this topic, This was by far the hardest part of the process. Everything from finding the right types of wood to getting straight cuts to even putting the thing together was difficult. Before I go deeper into the actual process of building the thing, Enjoy this picture of the finished headshell in all of its perfect glory (Just kidding, its the opposite of perfect)

Finished headshell in all of its glory

Using a plan I found on TAG (The amp garage), I went to home depot and had someone there cut the wood what was supposed to be straight pieces. When I got home though, I realized that they weren't that straight, which made the rest of the process slightly more difficult. I then used wood glue and furniture nails to hold the thing together. The frame on the inside is for holding up the chassis itself. The frame on the front is for the grillcloth. I thought I was going to be able to find a thin piece of wood to attach Vox diamond grillcloth like on the original SSS #004 and fit the frame in to the cab, but I was never able to find this wood at my local home depot. Because of this, I just left the front unfinished. For the suede, Ryan from The Tone Geek told me where he sources his suede from: The Hide House. I got 2 hides of turquoise suede from the hide house, and it was enough to cover the amp. I used contact cement to get it to stick. For the corners, I found chrome corners, probably on mojotone (I forget exactly where I got it from) I also got big rubber feel and a fender style handle to finish it off.
